Lot 1079 Ingot Mould Pair CA - Mining Hard goods/Important Mining Publications

John Taylor came to the California Gold Rush from England and was an early gold rush metals dealer. He parlayed the metals business into a chemical and assay supply house, which was inherited by his son, who bears the same name. It is thought that the senior Taylor was the son of a well known British assayer, who may have come to California in the early 1850s to work for companies associated with British funding for parts of the Mariposa estate. In this lot is one 12.75” long, with wooden handle, bullion mould. The mold bears two 2” diameter conical depressions and two half-inch diameter conical depressions. The top is embossed “John Taylor & Co/ Of Cal”. The mould seems to have been sprayed down in gold paint. The second mould in this lot is solid metal, 10” long including handle. The mould bears four rectangular depressions of varied sizes. No markings. Painted silver. - Jacobitz Collection
